GUEST POST – LUXE DESIGN
By: Angela Marchese
Have you ever been asked “What’s your design style?” and not know how to describe it? Modern, traditional, contemporary or eclectic are a few typical answers you might hear, but they don’t necessarily describe you well. Don’t panic! Figuring out your style is not as complicated as you might think.
Trends inevitably come and go, whether it’s in fashion, hair styles or home decor. Don’t jump on that trend bandwagon! Try formulating your own personalized version, something that shows your personality in colour and shape. Take a look in the mirror or inside your closet, because you are what you wear. Gravitating towards earthy neutrals or bold colors, subtle patterns or loud prints, or every shade of black, grey and white in your wardrobe is a good indication of what your home should feel like.
Follow your intuition—be inspired by every day influences, but stay true to what you know you’re comfortable with. It’s okay to draw ideas from TV, magazines, or resources like Houzz or Pinterest, but don’t get caught up with picture-perfect and staged images . Trust your instinct, and it will be easy and fun to see your sanctuary/home come to life.
Also remember that decorating can be done without breaking the bank. You can invest in major pieces like sofas, beds, tables, but you can also re-purpose old furniture by repainting or re-upholstering. The smaller items that accessorize the home can be more affordable and interchangeable. Change it up with different toss cushions or throw blankets on your couches. Sometimes you need to follow your gut, like shopping for clothes, and try a few things on before you find a good fit. It’s okay to return items! If all else fails and you realize that you are decoratively inept, it’s okay to hire a professional. Maybe it’s a few hours of consultation to unlock what you’re trying to achieve, so it’s worth it. A professional is more likely able to creatively communicate your vision, piecing together all of your puzzle pieces.
Remember that your home is YOUR home. It should tell a story about you and have your personal touches through furniture, art work, and accessories. Create your own story with your space and enjoy the process. It’s a road to self discovery, and there’s satisfaction in creating a comfortable space that is yours and yours alone. Enjoy the journey!
